Installing
The pre-formed pond
- When you have decided on a location, place your pool there.
- Mark the outline of the pool with sticks or something similar.
- Excavate the hole and cover the soil with a layerof sand approximately 10 cm thick.
- Insert the pool and fill its lower region with water to check whether the pool is level.
- Fill the gaps around the pool with sand.
- the sand well to secure the pool in place.
- Finally stack some soil around the edge of the pond.
The liner pond
- Mark the edges of the pond area with sand, a hose or a piece of string.
- Build in shelves and various zones for plants: bog zone up to 10 cm deep, shallow water zone 20 - 40 cm deep, deep water zone 60-150 cm.
- Work from the edges towards the middle and dig a ditch 15 cm deep around the pond. This is important for drainage because it stops the pond water from being drained away into the surrounding garden. After planting the ditch is filled up with gravel and overlapping liner can be cut back.
- Dig the hole deeper than the pond is supposed to be and remove all stones and roots. Important for fish-ponds: a lengthy beach area (ramp) protects fish from cats, a deep water zone and a bottom outlet (ask your specialist retailer). Install a safe exit (i.e. ramp) in case animals fall into the pond. Consider building in recesses for the later installation of planting baskets.
- Fill the excavated hole with 15 cm sand and pat it down firmly.
- Calculate the required amount of liner, i.e with a hose whose length you measure. Add 50 cm on each side for the edge on the pond. For a precise calculation refer to the following formulas:
| Length of liner = Length of pond+ 2 x Depth of pond + 2 x 50 cm (20 inches) (edges) |
| Width of liner = Width of pond + 2 x Depth of pond + 2 x 50 cm (20 inches) (edges). |
- Bury your spiral hoses for water supply to filter and water drainage if applicable so that they will be invisible later
- Cover the base and walls of the excavated pond with OASE underlay, press it down and cut off any overlapping pieces. Then lay the pond liner in the excavated hole, for example OASE Eurofol or Alfafol. Make sure you avoid creasing the liner.
- Line with pebbles and stones and set up the platforms for the planting baskets. Afterwards fill the deep-water zone with water.
- Now you can start the planting.
